Travel information
Green Travel
Conference participants are encouraged to opt for more sustainable travelling options, such as the train or bus, particularly if you can reach Amsterdam by means of transportation other than flying. This recommendation aligns with the University of Amsterdam's travel policy, which aims to reduce the CO2 emissions caused by official travel by 25% in 2026, as compared to the 2019 levels. There are direct train and bus connections to Amsterdam from Belgium, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, and France (from Paris and, in July and August, also from Marseille). There are also dozens of stop-over/indirect connections with other European countries. We recommend checking out www.omio.com, www.wanderu.com, or www.raileurope.com, for instance, for alternatives to flying.
Route description from London to Amsterdam Central Station by train
Booking your trip from London to Amsterdam Central Station is very easy. Via the trainline.com or nsinternational.com you can easily book your train ticket from London St. Pancras International to Amsterdam Central Station. The train will take you in less than 4 hours to Amsterdam.
Please note unlike the originally planned situation, "a six month suspension of services will no longer take place as the rail operator has found a solution to Amsterdam station works". So trains will still run between Amsterdam and London.
Route description Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) – Amsterdam city centre
From Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) trains leave every 10-15 minutes for Amsterdam Central Station.
The average journey time from the Airport to Amsterdam or vice versa is about 20 minutes. The fastest intercity connection takes 13 minutes.
Amsterdam Public Transport System
Although the city centre’s compact size means that most areas and sights are within walking distance of each other, Amsterdam’s public transport network (called 'GVB') is efficient, reliable, inexpensive and widely used. One million passengers travel the city by tram, bus, underground metro line and ferry every day.
The GVB day or multi-day ticket provides you with unlimited travel throughout Amsterdam, both day and night, on the bus, tram, and metro, for the number of days that best fits your plans.
Train tickets
Train tickets can be purchased from the NS train tickets machines at train station (main hall airport) (with coins or ATM/Credit cards) or online.
Note that the difference between first and second class travel in trains is negligible, although first class could be more comfortable during rush hour, when trains tend to be overcrowded.
There is a high penalty for travelling on the train without a valid ticket. Travelling by train within the Netherlands: www.ns.nl. Or buy your train ticket here.
By taxi
Taxis are waiting outside the arrival hall at Schiphol Airport and will bring you to Amsterdam City Center in less than 25 minutes for about €50,- one way.
