Frequently Asked Questions
Abstract submission and number of participations
How long should my abstract be?
All abstracts (paper, panel or roundtable) should have a maximum of 250 words.
Can I submit more than one paper abstract?
No. You are allowed one conference participation as a presenter. Note that roundtable participation counts as a discussant rather than a presenter role.
Who should submit the abstracts for papers on pre-arranged panels?
The paper presenters should each submit their paper abstracts. On their end, the session organiser should indicate the names of all paper presenters in the designated box on the panel submission form.
Can I submit more than one panel abstract?
No, unless it is the same panel spread over two sessions (part 1 and part 2). When your panel has more than 5 papers, you should create a ‘part 2’ to your panel and spread the papers equally between the two sessions. You are allowed to allocate 3-5 paper presentations per session, up to a maximum of 10 presentations spread over two sessions. Panels consisting of three or more sessions are not allowed and will not be considered.
Can I submit more than one roundtable proposal?
No, and roundtable proposals should be single session proposals with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 7 speakers. Roundtable participation counts as a discussant role.
Can I submit a panel abstract and a roundtable?
Yes, but do double-check the maximum amount of roles for all people involved. If this lead to people fulfilling double roles, we cannot consider the proposal(s). Remember: panel presenters are allowed only one paper presentation. Speaking on a roundtable counts as a discussant role.
How many participations am I allowed to have?
- You are allowed one participation as paper presenter.
- You are also allowed one role as panel organiser/chair (which can be a double session), and one role as roundtable organiser/moderator (single session). Note that panel and roundtable organisers are considered chairs of their session unless they indicate another person will take up the chairing role. Invited chairs or moderators are allowed, but do take into account that they cannot fulfil a double role (they cannot be chairs or moderators more than once).
- You are allowed to act as a discussant once. The discussant role is either for commenting on a panel session or for speaking at a roundtable.
Can I join the SLAS and/or PILAS events online?
No, both the SLAS conference and the PILAS day will be in person events, without online / hybrid participation (only the keynote lecture of the SLAS conference will be livestreamed).
When will I know my paper/panel/roundtable proposal has been accepted
You will be notified of acceptance no later than 20 December 2023.
Are there any travel grants available?
SLAS offers a small number of grants for Latin American scholars (Latin American Scholars Grant) and for Postgraduate and Post-Doc participants (PG & Post-Doc SLAS Conference Grants). See https://www.slas.org.uk/funding for the details and deadlines (note that grant applications generally open after the conference call for papers has closed).
Scheduling
When will the programme be published?
You can find the full programme here.
Can I request participation on a particular day?
No, due to the expected volume of submissions, size and availability of rooms at the University of Amsterdam we will not be able to accommodate to any scheduling requests. For this reason, we recommend all prospect participants to begin booking their travel/accommodation as soon as possible after abstract acceptance, on 20 December 2023. Travel and accommodation costs will rise as the summer draws nearer.
Of course, participants for the PILAS Day will all be scheduled on the PILAS Day (4 July).
Special Needs
I am vegan/vegetarian, kosher/halal, or have dietary restrictions.
There will be proper lunch and dinner options for you (and the possibility to indicate this upon purchase of the lunch/dinner vouchers). Note that some coffee machines at the University of Amsterdam Roeterseiland campus use plant-based milk instead of cow milk. These can be recognized by their green stickers.
Is the venue wheelchair friendly?
Yes, the venue is well-accessible with a wheelchair. There are elevators to each floor and each floor has a suitable bathroom.
Is there childcare available?
Though there are special rooms to pump breastmilk, the University of Amsterdam unfortunately does not have any childcare facilities. We sincerely apologise for this inconvenience, and urge you to inquire with your hotel if they may have or recommend any private facilities.
Lost & found
Where can I find lost and found items during the conference, and how can I inquire about them afterward?
For lost and found items, please visit the registration desk in the main hall of the Roeterseilandcampus (REC A). If you have any questions about lost items after the conference, contact +31 20 525 5387.
